Gad Shaanan, an industrial designer by profession, is the inventor and founder of YOFiMeter. With over 35 years of experience in a vast array of industries, he launched YOFiMeter in 2011 on the basis of a “clean slate” approach and a philosophy to: “remove barriers of use at every level, and make sure that the products fit into a consumer’s life, not disrupt it.”
Gad has assembled a talented and passionate multidisciplinary group to tackle the fundamental issues concerning testing and tracking one’s blood sugar levels, and all other data points associated with it. The team has built a network of endocrinologists, nurse practitioners, T1 and T2 consumers, parents of consumers with diabetes, clinics, hospitals, experts and payers, as advisors and sounding boards to the “clean slate” approach. YOFiMeter, in cooperation with a US based strip manufacturer, has jointly developed a unique strip and algorithm, in order to provide a higher level of accuracy of +/- 15%. The American made strips, and the strip cassette assembly, ensures quality and consistency from strip to strip. The fundamental thought was not to invent technologies for testing, but to invent a new experience of testing, recording and tracking data.
We are often asked why the health sector and why diabetes specifically? We believe the healthcare industry must go through an evolution of improved efficiency in order to reduce cost and improve outcomes and have people live better and out of hospitals. In other words, spend a little more on the front end in order to save a lot more on the back end. In our opinion, this is something that will happen, it’s just a question of time. Connected health, if executed properly, is the ideal solution. Connected devices and medical devices are both sectors where we have a lot of experience.
About 20 years ago we were tasked by a well-known brand with a project to develop a new blood glucose meter. When we went back 16 years later to see the progress in the industry, We were astonished as to how little was accomplished in improving the experience. Diabetes management is a 24/7, 365 days a year job with no breaks.
The challenge, is to develop an experience that is seamless on many levels. With that in mind, we set a goal to develop a BGM THAT IS ITS OWN DATA HUB, is always ready and does not rely on any other device to execute the task. In addition, “integrate the look and feel of consumer electronics, user interface, cellular connectivity and state of the art mechanics.” We have given up our consulting practice in order to focus on YOFiMeter and YOFiLife, the umbrella brand that YOFiMeter and other products be part of.
YOFiMeter, is only one of a number of products that we are working on, solely and exclusively for the purpose of making diabetes living easier.
